Male Wood Duck
Taken shortly after sunrise, found this fellow out a ways at Horicon Marsh. While I know quite a few of our backyard birds, I will be the first to admit I know very little with identification of other birds.
This summer I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow photographer by the name of Lisa who was out shooting birds the same morning I was at Horicon. Lisa has her own blog & while I was going through it recently, I discovered that male Wood Ducks have a different plumage in the summer months and is called an eclipse plumage. Bingo, what I had thought to myself that looked like a Wood duck, but still, where were all those brilliant feathers, now brought it all together for me. I have to say, I've been very fortunate on meeting many both very kind & knowledgeable people willing to share information or just to plain have a great conversation at Horicon.
